White Shopify Milestones bag award personalized for The Original Seat Hoodie, inscribed 'Congratulations The Original Seat Hoodie on reaching 10,000 orders. February 24 2026'

I was made redundant at 47. 16 months later, Shopify sent me this.

One thing before the story. I hit this milestone in February. It's now July. This post has been sitting as a draft for five months because I've been too busy running the business to hit publish. Honestly, that's the most accurate thing I could tell you about small business.

After 11 years of loyalty as a contractor at a small marketing company, I was told I was no longer needed. No notice. A 3 minute conversation, and that was that.

I was in my late 40s. I have two kids. I'd truly believed I'd be at that company for as long as I wanted to be. And in the weeks after, I sat with the question a lot of people sit with at some point in their life. What now?

I grappled with it for a few months. Felt worthless, honestly, for some of it. Then I put my head down and decided to become a sponge. Months of learning everything I could about running an online business. Communities, books, videos, courses, other founders' stories. Not because I had a plan yet. Because I wanted to prove something to myself, and more importantly to my kids, that being told you're not needed by someone else doesn't decide your worth.

A while later, The Original Seat Hoodie launched. A single product. A hooded car seat towel I'd created to solve a problem in my own white-seated family car.

16 months after we first launched, I opened Shopify to check on the day's orders, and there was a message at the top of the dashboard.

Congratulations on your 10K Milestone!

Shopify Milestones Achievement unlocked notification for The Original Seat Hoodie reaching 10,000 orders

I hadn't even been tracking the number. Wasn't paying attention to where we were up to. I'd been packing orders, replying to customer emails, organising stock, trying to keep up with everything growing around me. Ten thousand orders had just… happened.

A few weeks later, a small heavy box arrived from Shopify. Inside was a white Shopify milestone bag with a large 'S' on the front. On the back: Congratulations The Original Seat Hoodie on reaching 10,000 orders. February 24 2026. It sits on the shelf above my desk now. If you've ever sold anything on Shopify, you know these milestone bags. It's their way of saying you've crossed the threshold most stores never reach.

I look at it most mornings.

The customers, who you actually are

The thing I didn't expect, when I created the first Seat Hoodie, was how many different people would end up using it.

The original use case was straightforward. Busy mums, school-sport pick-ups, the kind of mess two teenagers in soccer boots create on the way home from training. But the messages I've had since launching have been from every walk of life. People telling me the Hoodie has saved their car seats. Tradies and gym-goers, sure. But also customers using it on mobility scooters. On wheelchairs after swimming. On gaming chairs at home. Surfers, dog owners, dads, grandparents, people who lease their cars and want to protect resale value. People I never built the product for, who looked at it and saw their own use case anyway.

That's been the most humbling part. Every “I love this!” message is from a real Aussie who chose to back a small brand instead of a big-box one, and I don't take that lightly.

A few of the ones that stuck with me:

“I bought these for my son who does a lot of surfing. Having the hood makes it easier than a towel, protects the seats from getting wet, sunscreen and sand. Easy to remove, shake and fold up for next time.”

Lyn A.

“Love em!!! They do exactly as advertised!! Keep the seats clean, & most importantly stay in place (I was using a big towel that kept falling down & moving, hopeless & frustrating) & look GREAT!!!”

Scott M.

“Yes, they are fabulous! They are as advertised, but best of all they are easy! easy to install, easy to use, easy to clean, perfect for my world.”

Karen T.

What 10,000 orders actually looks like behind the scenes

For anyone reading this who's running their own business, or thinking about starting one, here's the unfiltered version of what hitting this milestone actually looked like.

It looked like cramming pallets of stock into a two-car garage and watching the overflow take over the rest of the house.

It looked like the worst back pain of my life, before I finally accepted that this had outgrown what I could do from home and the next step was to move into a 3PL warehouse.

It looked like Black Friday, with my husband, both kids, and both my parents all helping pack orders. Working ridiculously long hours together. Eating dinner standing up. Nobody going to bed until the orders were out.

It looked like learning every part of an ecommerce business on the fly. Photography, copywriting, ads, customer service, inventory, shipping. I knew none of it. I learned all of it.

It looked like a brand that didn't take outside investment. Just bootstrapped, order by order, on Shopify, with Facebook and Instagram and word-of-mouth doing most of the heavy lifting.

It looked like this exact blog post sitting half-written as a draft for 5 months, because I've been too busy running the business to hit publish. (You are literally reading it in July.)

It's not glamorous. Mostly admin, emails, and packing tape.

But it's been the most rewarding thing I've done outside of being a mum to two amazing kids. Showing them, in real time, that you can do anything if you put your mind to it and work hard.

Why this product worked

I think the reason this caught on, when so many similar products haven't, is that we never tried to be a permanent seat cover brand. We were never trying to hide your car. We were trying to be useful for the 10% of moments when life gets messy. The soccer pick-up. The beach day. The gym run. The dog adventure. The tradie shift. The wet swimmer in the back seat. Then disappear back into your boot the rest of the time.

That's the whole pitch. Always has been. Will continue to be.

Thank you

To every single one of those 10,000 orders. To every customer who came back for a second one. To everyone who left a review that helped someone else find us. To every person who tagged us in a photo, every tradie who told another tradie, every dog owner who told another dog owner.

And to my husband, my kids, and my parents. For the garage, the Black Fridays, the late nights, and the unconditional support. None of this happens without you. Truly.

Self-belief and the support of the people who love you is everything.

Here's to the next 10,000.
